☀️ Sunny south window or grow light: six or more hours of bright light daily
🏷️ Labels and notebook: record planting date and first sprout day

HEAD START
BEAT THE COLD OUTSIDE
Outdoor soil stays cold long after spring arrives on the calendar. Tomatoes and peppers sown directly in the garden may rot or wait weeks to sprout. Starting seeds indoors gives you control over warmth, moisture, and light while frost still threatens outside. By the time outdoor nights stay above ten degrees Celsius, your seedlings already have true leaves and strong stems. That means earlier harvests and more fruit before summer ends.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Seed packets list "days to transplant" and "start indoors X weeks before last frost." That date is your indoor planting alarm clock.
EARLY!
CALENDAR
📅 Count backward from your area's last frost date. 🍅 Tomatoes often start six to eight weeks early.
FROST
❄️ Frost crystals on outdoor glass while seedlings stay cozy inside. 🌡️ Room temperature protects tender sprouts.

TRAY SCIENCE
FILL CELLS THE RIGHT WAY
Moisten seed-starting mix in a bowl until it feels like a wrung-out sponge. Fill each cell to the top and tap the tray gently to settle, but do not pack it hard. Use your finger or a pencil to make a shallow hole: about twice the seed's depth. Place one or two seeds per cell, cover lightly, and mist the surface. A clear dome lid holds humidity for germination, but remove it once green tips appear so mold does not grow. Label every row with plant name and date so identical sprouts do not confuse you later.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Fine seed-starting mix is sterilized to reduce fungus gnats and damping-off disease that kill baby seedlings.
PLANT!
MIX
🌍 Fine mix drains fast and stays airy. 🚫 Garden dirt compacts and carries weed seeds.
DEPTH
📏 Tiny seeds need shallow cover. 🫘 Large beans go deeper than lettuce dust.
DOME
🫧 Humidity dome acts like a mini greenhouse. 🌱 Remove when sprouts touch the lid.
PAGE 3 OF 5, LIGHT AND WARMTH
WINDOW
🪟 Rotate tray daily so stems grow straight. ☀️ South-facing windows give the brightest light.
GROW LIGHT
💡 LED bars on a timer add hours on cloudy days. 📐 Keep lights a hand-width above leaf tips.
COZY ROOTS
WARMTH SPEEDS GERMINATION
Most vegetable seeds germinate fastest between twenty and twenty-five degrees Celsius, ordinary room temperature. Cold windowsills at night can slow sprouting, so move trays away from drafty glass until seeds wake up. Heat mats under trays mimic warm soil and help peppers and tomatoes pop up sooner. Once seedlings stand up, cooler air between fifteen and twenty degrees makes stems sturdier. Leggy pale seedlings mean not enough light: move them closer to the window or add a lamp for fourteen to sixteen hours daily.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Seedlings lean toward light. Daily quarter-turns keep stems straight instead of bending one way like a sunflower chasing the sun.

STRONG ONE
ONE SEEDLING PER CELL
If two seeds sprout in one cell, they compete for light and roots tangle. Snip the weaker sprout at soil level with small scissors instead of pulling, which disturbs the survivor's roots. When the first true leaves appear beyond the round seed leaves, move the winner into a larger pot. Hold the seedling by a leaf, not the delicate stem. Bury the stem slightly deeper and new roots will grow from the buried section, making a sturdier plant. This upgrade gives roots room until outdoor planting day arrives.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Tomatoes can be planted deep because they sprout roots along buried stems. That makes wind-resistant outdoor plants later.
THIN!
SNIP
✂️ Cut extras at soil line, do not yank. 🏆 Keep the tallest healthiest sprout.
POT UP
🪴 Move to four-inch pot when roots peek through holes. 🌱 Bury tomato stems deeper for extra roots.
MIST
💦 Spray bottles prevent flood damage to babies. 👆 Finger test: moist mix, never soggy mud.

YOUR TURN
TRAIN FOR OUTDOOR LIFE
Seedlings raised indoors are soft like couch potatoes. Hardening off toughens them before permanent outdoor planting. On a mild day, set trays in shade for one hour, then bring them back inside. Add an hour each day for a week, then introduce morning sun. Wind and UV light thicken stems and deepen leaf color. After seven to ten days, transplant into your Topic 04 containers or garden beds on a cloudy evening. Water well and shade them for one more day. You just beat the season with science and patience.

REMEMBER
🌱 KEY FACTS
Start indoors before last frost. Fine mix + mist for germination. Bright light prevents leggy stems. Harden off one week before planting outside.
✅ Label every row on day one. ✅ One strong seedling per cell. ✅ Rotate trays daily toward the window.
