Beginners often stand too far back, leaving a tiny subject floating in a sea of floor, sky, or furniture. Your subject should dominate the picture. Walk closer until it fills most of the rectangle. On some phones you can crop later, but cropping throws away pixels and can look fuzzy. Your feet are the best zoom lens. Getting close also blurs busy backgrounds naturally, making the subject pop forward.
