FOLDED MEMBRANES, BIG JOB
Deep inside a cell spreads a maze of folded membranes called the endoplasmic reticulum, or ER for short. When ribosomes dot its outer surface, scientists call it rough ER. Those tiny protein factories build new chains right into the ER lumen, the space inside the membrane tunnels. Rough ER is the cell's production and packaging line, turning genetic recipes into proteins that will travel to membranes, organelles, or out of the cell entirely.

BUILD, FOLD, CHECK
Bound ribosomes on rough ER read mRNA and feed growing protein chains directly into the ER lumen. Inside that protected tunnel, the chain folds into its proper 3D shape with help from special ER proteins called chaperones. Misfolded proteins get caught and sent for recycling so they do not cause trouble. Only correctly folded proteins move on to the next stage of their journey through the cell.

Rough ER is not an isolated island. Its membranes connect directly to the nuclear envelope, the double membrane wrapping the nucleus. That physical link means mRNA copied from DNA can reach ribosomes on the ER almost immediately. From there the ER network branches outward through the cytoplasm like highways leaving a central hub. This layout keeps the message close to the machinery that turns it into protein.

SMOOTH ER: NO RIBOSOMES
Not all ER looks rough. Smooth ER is the same membrane system but without ribosomes on its surface, so it appears smooth under the microscope. Smooth ER handles different jobs, such as making lipids and helping detoxify certain chemicals. Rough ER focuses on protein production and folding. Finished proteins leave rough ER in small transport vesicles that bud off and travel to the Golgi apparatus, the cell's sorting and shipping center.
