SMOOTH MEMBRANES, BIG JOBS
Inside every eukaryotic cell runs a branching network of membranes called the endoplasmic reticulum, or ER. When ribosomes dot the outside, that region is rough ER. Smooth ER is the same membrane system but without ribosomes, so its surface looks sleek under an electron microscope. Smooth ER builds essential fats, stores useful molecules, and helps break down harmful chemicals. It is one of the cell's hardest-working cleanup and construction zones.

Rough ER looks bumpy because ribosomes cling to its outer surface. Smooth ER lacks those dots entirely, which is why scientists named it "smooth" when they compared the two types in the 1950s.
