Inside every eukaryotic cell runs a branching network of membranes called the endoplasmic reticulum, or ER. When ribosomes dot the outside, that region is rough ER. Smooth ER is the same membrane system but without ribosomes, so its surface looks sleek under an electron microscope. Smooth ER builds essential fats, stores useful molecules, and helps break down harmful chemicals. It is one of the cell's hardest-working cleanup and construction zones.

MAKING MEMBRANE FATS
Smooth ER is the main place where cells build lipids, the fat-based molecules that form membranes and send signals. It assembles phospholipids, the double-layer building blocks of every cell membrane. It also helps make cholesterol and steroid hormones, chemical messengers that control growth, stress, and reproduction. Cells that produce lots of hormones, like those in the ovaries and testes, pack their cytoplasm with smooth ER to keep up with demand.

In muscle cells, smooth ER takes on a special form called the sarcoplasmic reticulum. This network wraps around muscle fibers and stores calcium ions until a nerve signal arrives. When the signal comes, the sarcoplasmic reticulum releases calcium into the cytoplasm, triggering the proteins that make muscle fibers contract. After contraction, pumps return calcium to storage so the muscle can relax and get ready to move again.
