CYTOSOL: THE LIQUID MATRIX
The fluid part of cytoplasm is called cytosol. It is mostly water, but that water is far from plain. Dissolved inside are salts, sugars, amino acids, and thousands of other molecules the cell needs to survive. Proteins and enzymes float through the cytosol like workers in a busy kitchen. This controlled chemical mix keeps the cell's inner environment stable and ready for work.

ORGANELLES LIVE IN THE SOUP
Cytoplasm is cytosol plus all the organelles suspended inside it. Mitochondria, ribosomes, the endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi bodies bob and weave through the gel like boats in a busy port. Each organelle has a special job, but they all share the same cytoplasmic environment. Nutrients arriving through the membrane dissolve into the cytosol first, then reach the organelles that need them.

FIBERS THAT MOVE THE SOUP
Hidden inside cytoplasm is the cytoskeleton, a network of protein fibers that acts like scaffolding and railway tracks. Microtubules and actin filaments give the cell its shape and help organelles travel from place to place. Some cells even use these fibers to crawl across a surface. At the same time, metabolic reactions fire throughout the cytoplasm: sugars get broken down for energy, and enzymes build the molecules the cell needs to grow and repair itself.
