FROM mRNA TO PROTEIN
Ribosomes do not read DNA directly. Instead they latch onto messenger RNA, a copied instruction strand that carries the recipe for one protein. As the ribosome slides along the mRNA, it reads three-letter codons and grabs the matching amino acid from the surrounding cytoplasm. One by one, amino acids link together into a growing chain. When the ribosome reaches a stop signal, it releases a finished protein ready to fold and do its job.

Think of mRNA as a recipe card and the ribosome as the chef. The ribosome never sees the original DNA cookbook in the nucleus. It only follows the copied message that travels out into the cytoplasm.

Ribosomes come in two main workplaces. Free ribosomes drift through the cytoplasm and make proteins used right there inside the cell, such as enzymes for metabolism. Bound ribosomes cling to the outer surface of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, where they build proteins destined for membranes, organelles, or secretion outside the cell. The ribosome itself is the same in both places. Only its location and the protein recipe change.

BUILT FROM RNA AND PROTEIN
Every ribosome is made of two subunits, a large piece and a small piece, that snap together when protein building begins. These subunits contain ribosomal RNA, called rRNA, plus dozens of protein molecules woven around it. The rRNA does much of the catalytic work, helping form the bonds between amino acids. Ribosomes are not wrapped in a membrane like mitochondria or the nucleus. They are dense clusters of RNA and protein floating freely in the cell or stuck to membranes.

Unlike many organelles, ribosomes have no outer membrane. They are non-membrane-bound molecular machines. Their rRNA and protein parts assemble in the nucleolus before heading out to build proteins in the cytoplasm.
