In a parliamentary system, the executive branch gets its power from the legislative branch. That means the people who run the government day to day come out of parliament itself, not from a totally separate election. The legislature (often called parliament or the national assembly) makes laws and also chooses who leads the executive. This creates a very close link between lawmaking and governing.
