WHAT IS A MONARCHY?
A monarchy is a form of government where one person, usually a king or queen, sits at the top of the power structure. That ruler is called a monarch. In many monarchies the throne passes through a royal family line, so the next king or queen is often a son, daughter, or close relative of the current ruler. Monarchies are one of the oldest ways humans have organized leadership, long before modern elections became common.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
About 40 countries still have a monarch as head of state today. Most are constitutional monarchies where elected leaders run daily government, but a few remain absolute monarchies with far fewer limits on royal power.
