PROTO-INDO-EUROPEAN
ONE LANGUAGE STARTED IT ALL
Experts believe that about 6,000 years ago, people on the grassy plains of the Eurasian steppe spoke a single language. We call it Proto-Indo-European, which simply means the first language of India and Europe. Nobody wrote it down, so we cannot hear it, but scholars carefully rebuilt pieces of it by comparing its many descendants. It is the great-great-grandparent of hundreds of the languages spoken today.
