THE REASONS
WHY DO LANGUAGES DISAPPEAR?
Languages rarely vanish overnight. Usually it happens slowly, across generations. A few big, powerful languages like English, Spanish, and Mandarin are used in schools, on television, and online. Families may feel their children need these big languages to find jobs, so they stop teaching the smaller home language. Little by little the grandparents speak it, the parents understand it, and the children barely know it at all.

When a language dies, we lose far more than a list of words. Every language is a special way of seeing the world. Some hold the only names for hundreds of local plants and animals, knowledge that could even help medicine. Others carry stories, jokes, songs, and ways of counting that exist nowhere else. A lost language is like a library burning down, full of one-of-a-kind books that no one can ever read again.

Some languages that almost disappeared, like Hawaiian and Welsh, are now growing again because families chose to bring them back to life.
