To speak well, the human body slowly changed in two big ways. First, our voice box sits lower in the throat than in other apes, which lets us make a huge range of clear sounds with our tongue and lips. Second, and most important, our brain grew special areas for language. These brain areas help us learn thousands of words, follow grammar rules, and turn our thoughts into speech. Body and brain evolved together to make talking possible.
