WHY SO MANY LANGUAGES?
Long before scientists studied languages, people everywhere asked a puzzling question: why do humans speak so many different tongues? Travellers would meet other groups and not understand a single word. It felt strange and mysterious. Without science to explain it, people did what humans do best, they made up stories. These stories, called myths, tried to explain the great puzzle of why the world is filled with so many different languages.
