WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE RULE?
Sometimes a defender fouls an attacker, but the attacking team still has a great chance to score. The referee sees the foul but chooses not to blow the whistle right away. Instead, they let play continue so the team that was fouled can keep their momentum. This is called playing the advantage. The idea is simple: do not punish the victim of a foul by stopping a promising attack. Football is meant to flow, and the advantage rule helps the game stay exciting when a quick break is already underway. At World Cup 2026, watch closely when a tackle happens but the ball keeps rolling forward.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
The referee still records the foul even when playing advantage. If the attack fails, they can blow the whistle a few seconds later and give a free kick to the team that was fouled.
