ROBERT HOOKE SEES THE FIRST CELLS
In 1665, English scientist Robert Hooke sliced a thin piece of cork bark and placed it under his microscope. He saw thousands of tiny empty compartments, like the small rooms where monks live in a monastery. He called them "cells," from the Latin word cella, meaning a small room. His book Micrographia showed the world these strange honeycomb shapes for the very first time.

Hooke did not know cells were alive. The cork he studied was dead plant tissue, so the boxes looked empty. Still, he gave biology one of its most important words.

1838–39
ALL LIFE IS MADE OF CELLS
Nearly two centuries after Hooke, German scientists Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann put the pieces together. In 1838, Schleiden showed that all plants are built from cells. One year later, Schwann proved the same for animals. Together they formed cell theory: every living thing is made of one or more cells, and the cell is the basic unit of life. This idea changed biology forever.
