Something amazing was about to change that.

SUMER, 3200 BCE
THE SUMERIANS CRACKED THE CODE
About 5,200 years ago, in a land called Sumer between two great rivers, people invented one of the first writing systems in the world. They pressed the tip of a cut reed into soft clay tablets, making little wedge-shaped marks. We call this writing cuneiform, which means wedge-shaped. At first the marks were simple pictures, but slowly they grew into hundreds of signs that could record real language.

SURPRISING START
WRITING STARTED AS MATHS
Here is a surprise: the very first writing was not poems or stories, it was lists and numbers. Traders needed to keep track of sheep, grain, and oil. They began with small clay tokens, one for each item, then pressed pictures of the items into clay to record them. Over time these picture-marks turned into proper writing. So writing was really born from accounting, the job of counting and recording who owned what.

THE ALPHABET
FROM PICTURES TO AN ALPHABET
Early writing used a different picture for almost every word, so people had to learn hundreds of signs. Then someone had a brilliant idea: instead of drawing a thing, draw a sign for each sound. The Egyptians used picture-writing called hieroglyphs, and later the Phoenicians made a small set of signs for sounds. The Greeks and Romans borrowed and improved it, and that is where the ABC letters you use today came from.

WHY IT MATTERS
WRITING CHANGED EVERYTHING
Once people could write, words no longer floated away. Knowledge could be saved and shared across cities and even across thousands of years. People wrote down laws so everyone knew the rules, recorded science so others could learn, and finally captured stories, songs, and poems forever. Writing let humans build on each other's ideas instead of starting over each time. The marks a Sumerian pressed into clay led to every book, sign, and message you read today.
