At the World Cup, each country brings a squad of twenty-six players, but only eleven start on the pitch. The rest sit on the substitutes' bench: a row of seats along the sideline, usually under a shelter with team staff, doctors, and coaches. Bench players wear the same kit, warm up during the match, and stay ready to sprint on at any moment. The squad includes extra defenders, midfielders, forwards, and usually three goalkeepers. Coaches pick the starting eleven before kick-off, but the bench is their toolbox for changing the game when plans need a shake-up.
⚡ MATCHDAY SQUAD
Teams name a matchday squad before each game. Only those players can take part. You cannot call someone from the hotel at halftime. Every sub must already be on the bench sheet.
