SWAP TIME

WHAT IS A SUBSTITUTION?
A substitution is when a coach swaps one player on the pitch for another from the bench. Football is exhausting: players sprint, tackle, and jump for ninety minutes or more. When legs get heavy and lungs burn, fresh players can bring new energy, speed, and ideas. The player coming off jogs to the touchline and leaves the field completely before the substitute may enter. Coaches use subs to rest stars, change tactics, or respond when someone is injured. At World Cup 2026, smart substitutions can turn a tired draw into a late victory.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Substitutes must wait at the halfway line and can only enter when the referee signals. If a sub runs on too early, the team can get punished. Patience at the touchline is part of the rule.

WHO SITS ON THE BENCH?
At the World Cup, each country brings a squad of twenty-six players, but only eleven start on the pitch. The rest sit on the substitutes' bench: a row of seats along the sideline, usually under a shelter with team staff, doctors, and coaches. Bench players wear the same kit, warm up during the match, and stay ready to sprint on at any moment. The squad includes extra defenders, midfielders, forwards, and usually three goalkeepers. Coaches pick the starting eleven before kick-off, but the bench is their toolbox for changing the game when plans need a shake-up.
⚡ MATCHDAY SQUAD
Teams name a matchday squad before each game. Only those players can take part. You cannot call someone from the hotel at halftime. Every sub must already be on the bench sheet.

HOW IT WORKS

THE SUBSTITUTION PROCESS
Substitutions follow a clear routine. The coach tells the fourth official which player is coming off and which number is coming on. The official holds up an electronic board showing both shirt numbers so the stadium and TV viewers can see the change. The outgoing player must leave the field at the nearest point, usually jogging to the touchline. Only then does the substitute enter from the halfway line, often with a handshake or pat from the coach. The referee checks that the correct player is leaving and entering. Once the sub is on the pitch, they are a full player and can score, tackle, or even get a card.
⚡ CONCUSSION SUB
If a player suffers a head injury, teams may use a special concussion substitution that does not count against their normal limit. Player safety comes first, even during a World Cup knockout match.

GAME CHANGER

ONE SUB CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING
A "super sub" is a reserve player who transforms the match after coming on. They might score a late winner, set up a crucial goal, or energize a flat team with fresh pressing and fearless runs. Super subs train just as hard as starters but accept a different role: stay sharp on the bench, study the opponent, and explode when called. World Cup history is full of famous impact substitutes who became legends in the final minutes. Coaches now save their fastest attackers for late swaps when tired defenders struggle to keep up. The bench is not a punishment. It is a secret weapon.
⚡ IMPACT PLAYER
Some teams deliberately bring on fresh forwards in the last twenty minutes when legs are heavy and spaces open up. A super sub does not need ninety minutes to become the hero of the night.

THE LIMITS

SUBSTITUTION RULES TODAY
Modern World Cup matches allow up to five substitutions per team, spread across a maximum of three stoppages in play (plus halftime, which does not count). In extra time, teams get one additional sub and one extra stoppage window. Once a player is substituted off, they cannot return to that match. Goalkeepers can be swapped like any outfield player, but teams usually keep one backup keeper ready on the bench. Used-up subs cannot be "saved" for a later round: each match starts fresh. Knowing these limits helps you understand why coaches hesitate early and save changes for the decisive final third.
⚡ THREE WINDOWS
You can make five subs but only during three stoppages (plus halftime). A coach might bring on two players at once in one window to save time. Smart timing is part of the game.

📋 KEY FACTS
A substitution swaps a tired player for a fresh one from the bench. Squads have twenty-six players; eleven start and the rest wait on the sideline. Subs happen at stoppages with the fourth official's board. Up to five subs are allowed, and a super sub can win the match in minutes.
