THE BIG IDEA
Comic panel titled what is offside, labelled the big idea, from the KnowComic World Cup 2026 lesson on the offside rule, finally simple
WHAT IS OFFSIDE?
Offside is the rule that stops attackers from camping near the goal waiting for an easy tap-in. When a teammate plays the ball forward, an attacker must not be nearer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-last defender. If they are, they are in an offside position and the other team gets a free kick. The rule keeps football fair by forcing attackers to time their runs instead of hiding behind the defence. Every World Cup goal you cheer starts with players trying to beat this invisible line without getting caught.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Offside is judged at the exact moment the pass is played, not when the striker touches the ball. That is why you see attackers freeze and wait for the perfect moment to sprint.

THE OFFSIDE LINE

THE SECOND-LAST DEFENDER
Here is the part that confuses everyone: the offside line is not drawn at the last defender. It runs through the second-last defender, which is usually a centre-back but could be anyone on the pitch. The goalkeeper counts as a defender too, so if the keeper is behind the back line, the last outfield player sets the line. Picture an invisible line across the pitch at the second-last defender's position. Any attacker ahead of that line when the ball is played is offside. Once you find that second defender, the whole rule clicks into place.

ACTIVE PLAY
Comic panel titled when the pass is played, labelled active play, from the KnowComic World Cup 2026 lesson on the offside rule, finally simple
WHEN THE PASS IS PLAYED
Being in an offside position is not a foul by itself. The referee only blows the whistle if the attacker is involved in active play, meaning they touch the ball, block the goalkeeper's view, or distract a defender. The critical freeze-frame moment is when a teammate last plays the ball forward. Watch a through ball in slow motion: the striker might start behind the line, but if they were level when the pass left the foot, the goal stands. Great strikers master this timing, and that is why you hear commentators shout "he timed that run perfectly!"
⚡ NO OFFSIDE RESTARTS
You cannot be offside directly from a throw-in, a goal kick, or a corner kick. That is why crowded penalty boxes after corners are so chaotic and exciting!

HOW IT IS CAUGHT
Comic panel titled the flag and the screen, labelled how it is caught, from the KnowComic World Cup 2026 lesson on the offside rule, finally simple
THE FLAG AND THE SCREEN
Assistant referees stand on the touchlines watching the offside line with laser focus. When they spot an attacker ahead of the line at the moment of the pass, they raise a flag and the referee stops play. At the World Cup, VAR adds another layer: video assistants draw virtual lines on frozen replay frames to check tight calls down to centimetres. Sometimes the flag stays down until the attack finishes, so a goal can be reviewed and cancelled after the celebration. These tools make the game fairer, but they also make offside the most debated rule in every pub and living room.

BEAT THE REFEREE TO IT
Now you can watch World Cup matches like an expert. Before each through ball, find the second-last defender and watch the striker's position at the kick. If the attacker is level or behind that defender when the pass is played, stay excited because the attack is legal. If they are ahead, get ready for the flag or the VAR check. The best fans do not just watch the ball; they watch the line. Once this becomes a habit, offside stops feeling like a mystery and starts feeling like a puzzle you can solve in real time.
⚡ PRO TIP
On TV, pause before a through ball and count defenders between the striker and the goal. If only the goalkeeper is behind the striker, they are probably offside!
