THE TEAM MAP
Comic panel titled eleven players, eleven jobs, labelled the team map, from the KnowComic World Cup 2026 lesson on positions: keeper to striker
ELEVEN PLAYERS, ELEVEN JOBS
Football is not eleven people chasing one ball at random. Every player wears a shirt number and stands in a zone with a clear job. At the back sits the goalkeeper, the only player allowed to use hands inside the penalty area. In front come the defenders, who block shots and win tackles. Midfielders link defence to attack, running more than anyone else. Out wide, wingers use speed to cross the ball. Up front, strikers hunt goals. When you watch a World Cup match, you are watching a living puzzle where every piece has a role.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Shirt numbers once matched positions exactly. Number 1 was always the goalkeeper, number 9 the centre forward, and number 10 the creative playmaker. Many stars still wear those classic numbers today!

THE LAST LINE OF DEFENCE
The goalkeeper stands between the posts and wears a different coloured shirt so everyone can spot them instantly. Inside their own penalty area, they may catch, punch, or parry the ball with gloved hands. Outside the box, they become an outfield player and cannot touch the ball with hands at all. Great keepers command their defence, shouting where to stand, and they make split-second dives that save entire tournaments. A World Cup can turn on one miraculous fingertip save.

MIDFIELD MAGIC
Comic panel titled the heart of the team, labelled midfield magic, from the KnowComic World Cup 2026 lesson on positions: keeper to striker
THE HEART OF THE TEAM
Midfielders are the connectors. They receive the ball from defenders and pass it forward to attackers, or win it back when the other team has possession. A defensive midfielder, sometimes called the number 6, sits deep and breaks up danger before it reaches the back line. Central midfielders, the number 8s, run box to box, covering more ground than any other player. Without a strong midfield, a team cannot control a World Cup match, because the ball spends most of its time right here.
⚡ MIDFIELD FACT
Top midfielders can run over 12 kilometres in a single match and still deliver perfect passes in the final minute. They are the fittest players on the pitch!

THE WINGERS

SPEED DOWN THE SIDELINES
Wingers hug the touchlines and terrorise full-backs with pace. Their job is to beat a defender one-on-one, then whip a cross into the box or cut inside to shoot. A left winger attacks down the left flank, a right winger down the right. Some wingers are so fast they seem to fly past defenders like rockets. In a World Cup knockout game, one blistering run down the wing can unlock an entire defence and create the goal that sends a nation into celebration.

THE STRIKER
Comic panel titled the player who scores, labelled the striker, from the KnowComic World Cup 2026 lesson on positions: keeper to striker
THE PLAYER WHO SCORES
Strikers live closest to the opponent's goal and their main job is brutally simple: put the ball in the net. A centre forward, often wearing number 9, holds up long balls, wins headers, and finishes chances inside the box. Some strikers are poachers who lurk near the goal waiting to pounce. Others are speedsters who race behind the defence. Every World Cup has a golden boot winner, and that player is almost always a striker who turned chances into goals when the whole planet was watching.
⚡ GOLDEN BOOT
The World Cup Golden Boot goes to the top goal scorer of the tournament. Legends like Miroslav Klose and Ronaldo became heroes because strikers who score on the biggest stage are never forgotten.
