Midfielders are the connectors. They receive the ball from defenders and pass it forward to attackers, or win it back when the other team has possession. A defensive midfielder, sometimes called the number 6, sits deep and breaks up danger before it reaches the back line. Central midfielders, the number 8s, run box to box, covering more ground than any other player. Without a strong midfield, a team cannot control a World Cup match, because the ball spends most of its time right here.
