Ask a grown-up to stir one teaspoon of borax powder into one cup of warm water until it mostly dissolves. This activator carries borate ions that act like tiny bridges between polymer chains. Pour glue into a bowl, add a few drops of color if you want, and stir until smooth. Now add activator slowly, one spoon at a time, stirring after each dose. Stop when the mix pulls away from the bowl sides and starts feeling like goo instead of soup.

FROM SOUP TO SLIME
Borate ions from the activator connect neighboring polymer strands through weak bonds called cross-links. Think of cross-links as handshake points between noodles in a giant bowl of spaghetti. Enough handshakes and the whole mass moves together, yet still flows if you lift it slowly. Knead the blob in your hands for a minute to spread water evenly and finish linking. If it sticks to fingers, dab a tiny bit of activator on your palms, not a flood.

Normal liquids like water always pour the same way. Slime is a non-Newtonian fluid: it changes behavior when you push it. Lift gently and it oozes like thick honey. Yank quickly and cross-links resist, so it feels tougher for a moment. It is not truly a solid crystal or a free liquid, but a soft material in between scientists call a gel. Oobleck (cornstarch and water) is another famous rule breaker you can compare on another day.

Scrape excess slime into the trash, not the sink, unless your adult says a small rinse is okay. Wipe bowls with paper towels before washing. Wash hands well after touching borax mix. Store finished slime in a sealed bag for a few days of play. You built a polymer gel by cross-linking glue chains with borate ions and felt how force changes flow. Real labs use similar chemistry for contact lenses, gel ice packs, and soft robotics. Next upgrade: measure how much activator makes the stretchiest batch.
