We believe learning should be epic, not something that costs you your privacy. We don't sell your data to evil villains (or anyone else). We collect only what we need to run your account and give you the best comic-reading experience possible, and you can ask us to delete it at any time. This policy explains your rights under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the United States Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
KnowComic ("we", "us") operates knowcomic.com and is the data controller responsible for your personal information. For any privacy question or to exercise a right described below, contact us through our contact page. Where a school uses KnowComic with its students, the school is the controller of its students' information and we act as its processor, handling that data only on the school's instructions.
If you just read free comics, we don't need an account from you at all. When you create an account to go Pro or save your progress, we collect your email address, basic profile info (like a display name and avatar you choose), and your learning progress such as topics read, quiz scores, and certificates earned. If you sign in with Google, we receive the basic profile details Google shares (name, email, profile picture) so we can create your account, and nothing more. For classroom use, student profiles are deliberately minimal: a first name (or nickname) and a class code, with no email required.
Under the GDPR we rely on these legal bases: contract (to create and run your account and provide Pro features you signed up for); consent (for analytics and any non-essential cookies, which you control through our cookie banner and can withdraw at any time); legitimate interests (to keep the site secure, prevent abuse, and improve our comics, balanced against your rights); and legal obligation (to keep records such as basic payment history). Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 we collect and handle personal information in line with the 13 Information Privacy Principles, including collecting only what we need, telling you why, keeping it secure, and using it only for the purposes described here.
If you upgrade to Pro, our payment provider, Dodo Payments, handles the checkout and card details securely on their own systems. We never see or store your full card number. Dodo only tells us that your payment succeeded so we can switch on your Pro access. Dodo's own privacy terms cover how they process your payment data.
We use a few essential cookies to keep you logged in and to remember your settings while you learn about Black Holes. We also use Google Analytics to understand which comics are popular and how the site is performing. Analytics and advertising cookies stay switched off by default until you give consent through our cookie banner, and you can change your choice at any time by clearing your site data or re-opening the banner. We do not use your data to follow you around the web with ads. See our Cookie Policy for the full list.
KnowComic is made for learners aged roughly 6 to 18, so we take kids' privacy seriously. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 in the United States without verifiable parental or school consent, as required by COPPA, and we apply the same care to children everywhere. We collect as little as possible from young learners, never ask children for more personal information than is needed to read comics and save progress, and never sell children's data or use it for behavioural or targeted advertising. A parent, guardian, or school may review, correct, or delete a child's information, or refuse further collection, by contacting us using the link below, and we will action it promptly.
When a teacher or school uses KnowComic with students, we act as the school's processor: the school decides what student data is entered and we process it only to provide the service. Student profiles are minimal by design (first name or nickname plus a class code, no email), student work and results are visible only to that student, their teacher, and authorised school staff, and we do not use student data for advertising. On request from the school we will export or delete its students' data.
We do not sell your personal information. We only share it with the trusted services that help us run KnowComic: Dodo Payments (to process payments), Google (for optional Google Sign-In and Google Analytics), and our hosting provider (to actually serve the website). Each of these only receives what they need to do their job, and acts under their own privacy obligations.
KnowComic is run from servers that may be located outside New Zealand and the European Economic Area, and some of our providers process data in other countries. When personal information is transferred across borders, we take reasonable steps to ensure it is protected to a standard comparable to that required by the NZ Privacy Act 2020 and, for EU/UK data, by appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
You can delete your account at any time from your settings panel. Poof. Gone. Like the dinosaurs (too soon?). You also have the right to access, correct, and request deletion of the personal data we hold about you. Under the GDPR you additionally have the right to data portability, to restrict or object to certain processing, and to withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier processing. Under the NZ Privacy Act 2020 you can ask for access to and correction of your information. We extend the same access, correction, and deletion rights to learners and families in other countries with comparable privacy laws, including the United Kingdom (UK GDPR), Australia (Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles), and Canada (PIPEDA). If you live in California, you have the right to know what personal information we collect and why, to request a copy of it, to ask us to delete it, and to correct it. You also have the right to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We do not sell or share your personal information, and we never sell or share children's data. Other US states with similar laws (such as Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, and Utah) provide comparable rights, which we honour the same way. To make any request, use the contact page below.
We keep your account information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data from our systems, except for anything we're legally required to keep (for example, basic payment records). School student data is retained only while the school's account is active or until the school asks us to delete it.
If you think we've mishandled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to a regulator: in New Zealand, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz); in the EU/UK, your local data protection supervisory authority. If a privacy breach occurs that could cause serious harm, we will notify affected people and the relevant authority as required by law.
