WHY KNOWCOMIC?

HI, I'M RAHUL! 👋

I'm the founder of KnowComic. I'm currently doing my PhD at IIT Guwahati, after an MTech from IIT Roorkee. But at heart, I'm still the kid who learned about the world from comics.

I was never a fan of studying just for the sake of studying. But I have always been a fan of comics, and I learned so many things from them without even noticing I was learning.

That made me believe kids can be taught in a better way: through stories, pictures and characters that make them curious about the world around them.

Before building KnowComic, I looked at the research on how children learn. Stories and pictures help kids remember, and curiosity is what keeps them coming back to learn more. So that is what KnowComic is built on.

WHY COMICS? WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS

I didn't just trust my gut. Here is what scientists found when they tested comics and pictures against plain text.

1A smiling girl as streams of pictures and words twist together into a glowing light bulb above her head
WORDS + PICTURES WINIn 13 out of 13 experiments, people who learned from words and pictures did better on tests than people who got words alone.Mayer & Fiorella, Cambridge Handbook of Multimedia Learning, 2021
2A boy confidently raising his hand in class with a thought cloud of comic pictures about sleep
COMICS STICK IN MEMORY90 students learned about sleep from comic pages or the same facts as plain text. The comic readers scored higher on the memory test.Aleixo & Sumner, Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics, 2017
3A boy yawning over a grey textbook beside a girl excitedly reading a colourful graphic novel
BEATS THE TEXTBOOKWhen the same lessons were given as a graphic novel or a regular textbook, graphic novel readers remembered the exact material better.Short, Randolph-Seng & McKenny, Business Communication Quarterly, 2013
4Excited teenagers reaching for a tall stack of comic books in a library
KIDS WANT MORE873 teenagers read about viruses as a comic or an essay. Both learned the same, but comic readers were much more likely to want to read more, especially kids who said science "isn't for them".Spiegel et al., Research in Science Education, 2013

Honest note: the research on comics is still growing, and comics work best alongside good teaching, not instead of it. In one large study, middle achievers gained the most from comics, while top students did better with text (Lin & Lin, 2016). That's why every KnowComic topic still teaches real, checked facts and ends with a quiz.
