Cartoons often show hyenas as silly scavengers who only steal leftovers. Real spotted hyenas are tough, smart predators. The scientific name for the spotted hyena is Crocuta crocuta. They have sloping backs, round ears, and sandy fur with dark spots. Their jaws can crush bone with a bite stronger than a lion's. Most of their food comes from animals they hunt themselves, not from scraps. Hyenas deserve respect, not jokes.
