CAPE BUFFALO
Massive Cape buffalo Syncerus caffer herd on African savanna with dark brown bodies and curved horns
NOT A COW, NOT A PET
The African buffalo, also called the Cape buffalo, is one of the most powerful plant-eaters on the savanna. Its scientific name is Syncerus caffer. These animals have thick dark-brown bodies, heavy curved horns, and a boss of bone on the forehead where the horns meet. A big bull can weigh over 700 kilograms. Buffalo look slow, but they are fast, strong, and famously dangerous when threatened. Many guides rank them among the most hazardous large animals in Africa, alongside hippos and crocodiles. Never treat a wild buffalo like a farm cow.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Cape buffalo live in herds that can number from a few dozen to over a thousand animals, grazing grass and drinking together at waterholes.

BOSS HORN

🦴 The horn boss is a solid shield of bone on the forehead, built for head-to-head clashes.
🔧 Horns curve outward and hook back, perfect for goring anything that gets too close.
OXPECKERS
Red-billed oxpeckers picking ticks from buffalo back in symbiosis on savanna
🐦 Oxpecker birds ride on buffalo backs and eat ticks, a helpful partnership on the plains.
👂 Buffalo also use sharp hearing and smell to detect lions long before an attack starts.
