The chimpanzee is one of our closest living relatives. Its scientific name is Pan troglodytes. Chimps live in forests and woodlands across central and western Africa. They have dark fur, long arms, and hands that look a lot like human hands. Their faces show expressions we easily read: joy, fear, anger, and curiosity. Scientists study chimps to learn where humans came from and how minds grow. Along with bonobos, chimpanzees share more DNA with us than with any other animal on Earth. That makes every chimp community a window into our own deep past.
