PAGE 1 OF 5 — THE GEMSBOCK
ORYX GAZELLA
Gemsbok oryx Oryx gazella with long straight horns standing in Namib desert white coat
LORD OF THE DUNES
The gemsbok is a striking desert antelope known to scientists as Oryx gazella. Its pale coat reflects harsh sunlight, and bold dark markings run along its face and legs. Both males and females carry long, spear-like horns that can reach over a metre. Gemsbok roam dry grasslands and sandy deserts across southern Africa, from Namibia to Botswana and beyond. They look calm and elegant, but life in the desert is tough. Water holes are far apart and the sun beats down relentlessly. Oryx survive where many animals would overheat and collapse.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Gemsbok can go for days without drinking free water because they get moisture from plants and are masters at saving water inside their bodies.

🗡️ Both male and female gemsbok grow long horns that help them defend against lions and other predators.
⚔️ When threatened, they can lower their horns and stand their ground instead of running away.

🌅 They are most active in cooler morning and evening hours when the desert air is gentler.
