TANK BODY
LOOKS LIKE A LIVING TANK
Rhinos are huge, heavy plant-eaters with grey-brown skin that looks like armour plates. That skin is thick and tough, but it is not metal. It is just skin with deep folds, great for brushing through thorny bushes. A horn grows from the nose, not from bone sticking out. Rhinos belong to an ancient group of mammals that have walked Earth for about 50 million years. Today only five species survive, and every one of them needs our help.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
After elephants, white rhinos are among the heaviest land animals alive today. A big male can weigh over two tonnes.
THICK!
FIVE LEFT
🌍 Five rhino species still live on Earth today, in Africa and Asia.
🦏 They are white, black, greater one-horned, Javan, and Sumatran rhinos.
KERATIN
🦷 Rhino horn is made of keratin, the same stuff as your fingernails and hair.
💅 It keeps growing through life, like a very thick fingernail on the nose.
