NOT A CAT, A DESERT MONGOOSE
Meerkats are small, slim mammals with tan fur, dark eye patches, and a pointy snout. Their scientific name is Suricata suricatta. They belong to the mongoose family, not the cat family, even though their name sounds like "cat." Meerkats live in dry open country across southern Africa, especially the Kalahari Desert. Hot sand, sparse grass, and thorny bushes are normal home turf. They are active by day, when they hunt insects and dig for food. At night they sleep safely underground in burrows.
