Around 1800, a new spirit called Romanticism swept across Europe. Romantics believed feeling mattered more than cold reason and strict rules. Their paintings captured the awesome power of nature, the depth of human emotion and the beauty of imagination. Artists wanted you to shiver at a storm, dream of distant lands or feel the ache of longing in your chest. This was art for the soul, not just the clever mind. Many Romantics also reacted against the Industrial Revolution, when smoky factories spread across the land. They turned to wild forests, crashing seas and heroic stories to find something true and alive.
