PAGE 1 OF 5 — PAINT THE FEELING INSIDE
THE EXPRESSIONIST REVOLUTION
Expressionist painting with distorted figures, bold colour and raw emotional brushstrokes
FEELINGS FIRST, PHOTOS NEVER!
Around 1905, artists across Europe began a movement called Expressionism. They did not want to copy the world like a camera. They wanted to show what fear, anxiety and obsession feel like inside the human mind. To do that, they twisted bodies, stretched faces and pushed colour until it screamed. Brushstrokes became wild and raw, as if the painter's hand could not stay calm. Expressionism spread from Norway to Germany and beyond, linking artists who shared one bold idea: art should reveal inner truth, not polite surface beauty. Their work still feels urgent today because it speaks directly to emotions we all know.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
The word Expressionism describes art that expresses inner feeling. It became a major force in painting, printmaking and even early film before and after World War I.
FEEL!
DISTORTED FORMS
Expressionist artwork with twisted figures and exaggerated shapes conveying anxiety
🌀 Expressionists bent shapes to match a mood, not a ruler or a photograph.
😰 A wavy bridge or stretched face can show dread better than perfect realism.
RAW BRUSHWORK
Close-up of Expressionist paint with thick energetic strokes and bold colour
🖌️ Thick, visible strokes show speed, anger and nervous energy on the canvas.
⚡ Raw brushwork makes viewers feel the artist's hand moving in the moment.
