After the Early Renaissance opened the door, Italy entered a short but dazzling age called the High Renaissance, roughly from about 1490 to 1520. In just a few decades, artists reached a level of harmony, balance and skill that still amazes the world today. Painters and sculptors studied anatomy, light and geometry to make every figure look perfectly natural and beautiful. Three giants led the way: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. Their masterpieces, from a mysterious smile to a painted chapel ceiling, became the gold standard for all Western art that followed.
