⭐ LIFE OF A STAR
TOPIC 03 · ASTRONOMY · FROM NEBULA TO BLACK HOLE
PAGE 1 OF 5 — BIRTH OF A STAR
THE STELLAR NURSERY
EVERY STAR BEGINS AS A CLOUD
Deep in space, enormous clouds of hydrogen gas called nebulae are the birthplaces of all stars. Gravity slowly pulls the gas inward and the cloud begins to collapse and spin. At the centre, temperatures rise to millions of degrees and suddenly nuclear fusion ignites. A new star blazes to life, pouring out energy that will last for billions of years.
🌌 STELLAR NURSERY NEARBY
The Orion Nebula, visible to the naked eye, is actively forming new stars right now, 1,344 light-years away. The Pillars of Creation inside the Eagle Nebula are columns of gas 4 to 5 light-years tall where new stars are being sculpted at this very moment.
IGNITION!
PROTOSTAR
🌞 Gas cloud collapses under its own gravity
🔥 Core heats up from compression alone
⏱️ Protostar phase can last millions of years
FUSION BEGINS
⚛️ Hydrogen fuses into helium at 10 million degrees
⚡ Energy released pushes outward against gravity
⭐ The star enters the main sequence: stable for billions of years
PAGE 2 OF 5 — THREE TYPES OF STARS
THE MAIN SEQUENCE
NOT ALL STARS ARE THE SAME
The mass a star is born with determines its colour, brightness, temperature, and how long it lives. Tiny red dwarfs burn so slowly they outlast everything. Giant blue stars burn so fiercely they die in millions of years. Our Sun sits comfortably in the middle, giving us a warm, stable home for 10 billion years total.
DIVERSITY!
RED DWARFS
🏸 Smallest and coolest stars in the universe
⌛ Live for trillions of years: longer than the universe's current age
🏠 75% of all stars in the Milky Way are red dwarfs
YELLOW DWARFS
☀️ Medium stars like our Sun: live about 10 billion years
🌍 Give us the light and heat that makes life possible
📈 Will swell into a Red Giant then shrink to a White Dwarf
BLUE GIANTS
💥 Massive, blazing hot, brilliant blue-white
🌟 Thousands of times brighter than our Sun
⚡ Burn out in just a few million years then explode
PAGE 3 OF 5 — THE SUN'S LIFE STORY
TODAY
☀️ Our Sun is 4.6 billion years old right now
🔥 Fusing 600 million tonnes of hydrogen per second
⌛ Has about 5 billion more years of stable life left
5 BILLION YEARS
🔴 Hydrogen runs out: Sun swells into a Red Giant
🌍 Expands so large it could swallow Earth's orbit
✨ Sheds outer layers into a beautiful Planetary Nebula
FROM SUN TO WHITE DWARF
OUR SUN WILL END QUIETLY
When our Sun runs out of hydrogen in about 5 billion years, it will swell to hundreds of times its current size, engulfing the inner planets. Then it will gently puff its outer layers outward into a glowing shell of gas called a Planetary Nebula. What remains at the centre is a tiny, incredibly dense White Dwarf, about the size of Earth but containing the full mass of the Sun.
⭐ WHITE DWARF FACT
A teaspoon of white dwarf material weighs about 15 tonnes. It will slowly cool over trillions of years, eventually becoming a cold, dark Black Dwarf. No black dwarfs exist yet: the universe is not old enough.
BEAUTIFUL!
PAGE 4 OF 5 — SUPERNOVA: DEATH OF A GIANT
CORE COLLAPSE SUPERNOVA
MASSIVE STARS DIE WITH INCREDIBLE VIOLENCE
Stars more than 8 times the mass of our Sun do not go gentle into the night. When their iron core can no longer support fusion, it collapses in less than a second. The outer layers slam into this newly rigid core and bounce outward in an explosion so powerful it briefly outshines an entire galaxy of hundreds of billions of stars. Every element heavier than iron, including the gold in jewellery and the uranium in power stations, is forged in these final moments.
KABOOM!
NEUTRON STAR
🔮 Core collapses into a neutron star: 20km across, 2 solar masses
🌍 A teaspoon weighs one billion tonnes
⚡ Pulsars spin up to 700 times per second
BLACK HOLE
⬛ Most massive cores collapse further into a black hole
🐧 Gravity so strong not even light can escape
🌟 These are the stellar-mass black holes in our galaxy
STARDUST
✨ The explosion scatters elements across light-years of space
🌍 These elements seed the next generation of stars and planets
⚛️ Carbon, oxygen, iron: all forged inside dying stars
PAGE 5 OF 5 — YOU ARE MADE OF STARS
THE LEGACY
EVERY ATOM IN YOUR BODY CAME FROM A STAR
The hydrogen in your body was made in the Big Bang. The carbon in your DNA, the oxygen you breathe, the calcium in your bones and the iron in your blood were all forged inside stars that lived and died billions of years before our Solar System existed. You are not just watching the universe. You are the universe, thinking about itself.
🧬 CARL SAGAN SAID IT BEST
We are a way for the cosmos to know itself. The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of star stuff.
STARDUST!
PLANETARY NEBULA
✨ Sun-like stars end as glowing planetary nebulae
🔭 Among the most beautiful objects in the sky
🌍 A tiny white dwarf glows at the centre for trillions of years
REMEMBER THIS
📌 KEY FACTS
🌞 Stars born in nebulae from collapsing gas clouds
⭐ Small stars: live trillions of years as red dwarfs
☀️ Sun: 10 billion years total, ends as white dwarf
💥 Massive stars: explode as supernovae, form black holes
✨ Every heavy atom in your body came from a dead star
