PAGE 1 OF 5 — FASTER THAN LIGHT
10⁻³⁶ TO 10⁻³² SECONDS
THE UNIVERSE DOUBLED OVER AND OVER IN AN INSTANT
In the first unimaginably tiny fraction of a second after the Big Bang, a burst of energy caused space itself to expand at an extraordinary rate: doubling in size at least 90 times in 10 to the power of minus 32 seconds. This is faster than the speed of light, which is allowed because it was space itself stretching, not matter moving through space. A region smaller than a proton became something larger than our entire observable universe.
🔮 SCALE OF INFLATION
During inflation, the universe grew by a factor of at least 10 to the power of 26. That is 100 million billion billion times larger in a time interval so brief it makes a billionth of a second seem like an eternity by comparison.

PAGE 2 OF 5 — THREE PROBLEMS INFLATION SOLVED
THE MOTIVATION
THE BIG BANG HAD THREE DEEP MYSTERIES. INFLATION SOLVES ALL THREE.
In 1980, physicist Alan Guth proposed inflation to solve three nagging puzzles about the Big Bang that no other theory could explain. The standard Big Bang model could not account for why the universe looks so smooth and uniform, why it appears geometrically flat, or why no exotic particles called magnetic monopoles have ever been detected. Inflation solves all three with a single mechanism.
SOLVED!
HORIZON PROBLEM
📡 CMB is the same temperature in all directions (same to 0.003%)
⛔ Opposite sides of the sky were never in contact: no time for heat to spread
⚡ Inflation: they were once touching before inflation stretched them apart
FLATNESS PROBLEM
🌍 The universe is geometrically flat to extraordinary precision
🔮 Without inflation, this requires impossible fine-tuning at the Big Bang
⚡ Inflation: like zooming into a sphere, any curved surface becomes flat
MONOPOLE PROBLEM
🤔 Particle physics predicts abundant exotic particles called monopoles
⛔ But none have ever been detected anywhere in the universe
⚡ Inflation: diluted them to near zero density by expanding space so fast
PAGE 3 OF 5 — THE INFLATON FIELD
FALSE VACUUM
⚡ The inflaton field starts in a false vacuum: a high energy unstable state
🔥 Like a ball on a hilltop: it rolls down slowly at first (slow roll)
▲ While rolling, the field's energy drives exponential expansion
REHEATING
💥 Inflation ends as the field reaches the true vacuum
🔥 All stored energy converts to a hot dense plasma: reheating
🌍 The standard Big Bang hot dense universe resumes from here
THE INFLATON FIELD
A QUANTUM FIELD POWERED THE FASTEST EXPANSION EVER
The driving force of inflation was likely a quantum field called the inflaton. During inflation, this field was slowly rolling down an energy hill, and as it did so, its potential energy drove the exponential expansion. When it reached the bottom of the hill, inflation switched off and all the energy was rapidly converted into a hot plasma of particles, effectively starting the conventional Big Bang that we know.
🌟 QUANTUM SEEDS
Quantum fluctuations in the inflaton field were stretched to cosmic scales during inflation. These tiny quantum ripples became the seeds of all structure in the universe: every galaxy, star, and planet including Earth.

PAGE 4 OF 5 — THE EVIDENCE
CMB EVIDENCE
THE CMB IS INFLATION'S FINGERPRINT
The Cosmic Microwave Background is the strongest evidence for inflation. Its near-perfect uniformity across the entire sky confirms inflation's prediction. The spectrum of its tiny temperature fluctuations matches the pattern inflation predicts from quantum fluctuations stretched to cosmic scales. The positions and heights of the acoustic peaks in the CMB power spectrum are also consistent with an inflationary origin.
PROVEN!
TEMPERATURE UNIFORMITY
🌈 CMB temperature is the same in all directions to 1 in 100,000
⚡ This is exactly what inflation predicts: everything was once connected
📡 Without inflation, this uniformity is inexplicable
SCALE-INVARIANT SPECTRUM
📊 CMB fluctuations have nearly the same amplitude at all size scales
⚛️ This scale-invariance is a direct prediction of slow-roll inflation
🌟 Planck satellite confirmed this to extraordinary precision
GRAVITATIONAL WAVES
🌝 Inflation should have produced primordial gravitational waves
📡 These would leave a distinctive swirling pattern (B-modes) in the CMB
🔍 CMB-S4 and Simons Observatory are searching for this smoking gun
PAGE 5 OF 5 — THE MULTIVERSE
ETERNAL INFLATION
INFLATION MAY STILL BE HAPPENING RIGHT NOW
In most inflation models, once inflation starts, it never fully stops everywhere. While it ends in some regions, creating pocket universes like ours, it continues in others, spawning an endless foam of new universes. Our observable universe is just one tiny bubble that stopped inflating. Other bubble universes may have completely different physical constants, different numbers of dimensions, and different laws of nature. This is the inflationary multiverse.
🔮 WAS IT ALAN GUTH?
Alan Guth proposed inflation in 1980 at age 32 while a postdoctoral researcher at SLAC. He later said he knew it was a good idea when his thesis advisor told him: "You have invented something genuinely new." The paper transformed cosmology overnight.

OUR BUBBLE
🌟 Our universe is one bubble that stopped inflating 13.8 billion years ago
⬤ Other bubbles may have different constants: different atoms, different stars
🔍 Whether other universes exist is currently untestable: still theoretical
