SUGARCANE HOME
SUGARCANE BEGAN IN NEW GUINEA
Sugarcane is a tall grass packed with sweet juice. People in New Guinea began growing it thousands of years ago. Farmers chewed the stems and learned to crush them for syrup. Later, makers boiled the juice until crystals formed. Those white crystals are the sugar we know today. A plant that started on Pacific islands would one day travel around the world.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Sugarcane was first domesticated in New Guinea long ago. Exact years are hard to pin down, but the crop is very old.
SWEET!
TALL CANE
🌾 Sugarcane can grow taller than many adults, with thick green stems full of sweet juice.
💧 Crushing the stems releases sticky liquid that can be boiled into syrup and crystals.
CRYSTALS
💎 Table sugar is made of tiny crystals that sparkle when light hits them.
🍬 The same sweetness ends up in cakes, drinks, and many packaged snacks.
