Long before today's maps, Earth's big land pieces sat close together in a giant landmass called Pangea. You may also see it spelled Pangaea. Pangea was a supercontinent, which means a huge joined land made of many continents. Around it stretched a vast ocean. Animals and plants that lived then could walk or grow across land that later became separate places. Pangea helps us imagine how Earth's surface has changed over deep time.
