A continent is a very large piece of land on Earth. Oceans wrap around these big landmasses, so continents stand out on a globe or map. Continents are much larger than islands. An island is land with water all around it, but it is usually far smaller. When people talk about continents in school, they often mean the biggest land areas used on classroom maps. Looking at Earth from space, you can see green, brown, and white land beside deep blue seas.
