POLES
Earth globe showing icy North Pole Arctic and South Pole Antarctica
ICY ENDS OF OUR PLANET
Spin a globe and find the very top and the very bottom. Those spots are the North Pole and the South Pole. Both places get little direct sun, so they stay bitterly cold for most of the year. Thick ice covers huge areas, and the air can feel sharp on your face. The poles look alike from space, but they are built differently under the ice. One sits on ocean water. The other sits on a giant landmass.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Antarctica holds the coldest temperatures ever measured on Earth. The Arctic is also extremely cold, just not quite the record holder.
ICE!
NORTH
Arctic sea ice floating on the Arctic Ocean at the North Pole
🧊 The Arctic is mostly ocean water covered by floating sea ice.
🌊 At the North Pole you stand on ice over deep salt water, not solid land.
SOUTH
Antarctica continent covered by a thick ice sheet
🇦🇶 Antarctica is a real continent of rock buried under a huge ice sheet.
❄️ The South Pole sits on that frozen land, not on drifting sea ice alone.
