CHINA BEFORE ONE EMPEROR
For centuries after the Zhou dynasty lost real power, China split into rival kingdoms called the Warring States. States such as Qin, Chu, Zhao, Wei, Han, Yan, and Qi fought with iron weapons, crossbows, and growing armies. Farmers suffered when armies marched through fields. Roads and laws differed from state to state. Merchants struggled when every border used different weights and coins. Philosophers debated how to restore order. Some praised gentle Confucian ethics; others demanded harsh punishment. Out of this violence, the western state of Qin would grow strongest and end the chaos by creating the first unified Chinese empire in 221 BCE.

The Warring States period (roughly 475 to 221 BCE) saw constant warfare until Qin conquered its rivals and founded a single empire.
