ASHOKA AND THE MAURYAN WORLD
Ashoka ruled the vast Mauryan Empire in ancient India, stretching from Afghanistan to much of the subcontinent. His grandfather Chandragupta Maurya had forged this superstate through war and clever statecraft, as explored in Topic 12. Ashoka began as a fierce warrior king who expanded borders and crushed rivals. Royal inscriptions from his early reign boast of hunting expeditions and military glory. Yet one campaign changed everything. After conquering the eastern kingdom of Kalinga around 261 BCE, Ashoka saw the scale of death and suffering. Captured families, burned villages, and grieving soldiers haunted him. He turned away from conquest and embraced a moral code called Dhamma, inspired by Buddhist teachings of compassion and non-violence.
👑 MAURYAN
The Mauryan Empire (c. 322 to 185 BCE) was one of the largest states in ancient South Asia. Ashoka ruled most of it at its height.

  • The Mauryan capital Pataliputra sat near modern Patna on the Ganges.
  • Provinces were linked by roads, officials, and a standing army.
  • Ashoka inherited an empire built by conquest, not gentle persuasion.
WARRIOR KING

  • Before Kalinga, Ashoka promoted himself as a bold, victorious ruler.
  • Mauryan armies used elephants, chariots, and large infantry forces.
  • Power seemed to depend on the sword, until Ashoka questioned that idea.
