TENOCHTITLAN
A CAPITAL ON THE WATER
According to tradition, the Mexica (Aztec) people founded Tenochtitlan in 1325 on an island in Lake Texcoco. Causeways linked the city to the shore. Canals carried canoes between neighbourhoods. At its height, Tenochtitlan amazed Spanish newcomers with busy markets, clean streets, and towering temple pyramids. It was one of the largest cities in the Americas before modern times.
