CITIES THAT LOOKED OUTWARD
The Phoenicians lived along the eastern Mediterranean coast in what is now mostly Lebanon. Their famous city-states included Tyre, Sidon, and Byblos. They were not one giant kingdom with a single king forever. They were skilled shipbuilders and traders who sailed west for cedar wood, metals, glass, and cloth. Because their homeland was a thin strip of coast, the sea became their highway.
