AN EMPIRE ON THE NIGER
The Mali Empire grew in West Africa after the time of Sundiata Keita in the 1200s. It controlled key stretches of the Niger River region and taxed trade that crossed the Sahara. Gold from the south and salt from the desert north made the routes incredibly valuable. Camels carried goods across blazing sand. Cities and courts grew rich from that traffic.
