Alexander was born in 356 BCE, son of King Philip II of Macedonia. As a youth he studied with the philosopher Aristotle. When Philip was assassinated in 336 BCE, Alexander took the throne in his twenties. He secured Greece, then turned east against the huge Persian Empire. Ambition, training, and a tough Macedonian army launched one of history's most famous campaigns.
