The ancient Olympic Games were held at Olympia in the western Peloponnese to honour Zeus. Tradition dates the first games to 776 BCE. Athletes, trainers, and spectators travelled from many Greek cities. A sacred truce, the ekecheiria, aimed to protect travellers heading to the festival. The Games were religion, politics, and sport woven together.
