HIGHWAYS OF SAND AND SEA
The Silk Road was never a single paved highway. It was a shifting network of caravan tracks, mountain passes, and later sea lanes linking China with Central Asia, Persia, India, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. Merchants rarely travelled the whole way. Goods passed through many hands at oasis towns. The name Silk Road is modern, but the trade was ancient and real.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
The name Seidenstrasse (Silk Road) was popularised by the German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen in the 1800s.
