The Ottoman state began around 1299 as a small Turkish principality on the edge of the Byzantine world. Skilled leaders expanded through Anatolia and into the Balkans. By clever warfare, alliances, and administration they became one of history's great powers. At its height the empire touched Europe, Asia, and Africa.
