Temujin grew up in the harsh Mongolian steppe, surviving exile and tribal feuds. In 1206 a great assembly named him Genghis Khan, leader of the united Mongols. He organised warriors into decimal units and rewarded talent over old clan rank. A new military machine was born on horseback.
