Carthage began as a Phoenician colony on the North African coast in what is now Tunisia. It grew into a wealthy maritime empire trading across the western Mediterranean. Romans called the Carthaginians Poeni, which gives us the word Punic. Control of islands, ports, and silver made rivalry with rising Rome almost inevitable.
