Muscles turn chemical energy into movement. You have more than 600 skeletal muscles attached to bones by tough cords called tendons. They let you walk, write, blink, and smile. Some face movements use many small muscles working together. A big frown often uses more muscles than a simple smile, though exact counts vary between people. Muscles never push bones directly. They only pull, so pairs work in opposition to bend and straighten joints.
