Skin is your body's largest organ, not just a wrapper. Spread flat, an adult's skin covers about 2 square metres, roughly the size of a small door. It keeps water inside you and blocks many germs from getting in. Nerves in skin let you feel touch, heat, cold, and pain. Blood vessels help control temperature by widening or narrowing. Sweat glands release moisture that cools you when you overheat. Without skin, infection and fluid loss would happen fast.

Skin also helps make vitamin D when sunlight hits it, which supports healthy bones and immunity.
