Trees make oxygen, but they are not the whole story. About half of the oxygen made on Earth comes from the ocean. Tiny ocean plants called phytoplankton do much of that work. They drift near the sunny surface and turn sunlight into food. As they grow, they release oxygen into the water and air. The ocean is a quiet oxygen factory floating all around our planet.
